Activism and literature: literary discussion and reading theater with contemporary Indonesian writer Ayu Utami

On 2 December, at the Open Workshop (Nyitott Műhely) in Budapest, world literature lovers can meet award-winning Indonesian author Ayu Utami, who will discuss her best-selling Saman-Larung duology, of which Saman is published in Hungarian, as well as contemporary Indonesian literary trends, the clash between Western and Eastern cultures, the specificities of multicultural and post-colonial societies, the responsibilities and opportunities of literary scholars in a dictatorial state, and many other issues that are of great concern to us.
Co-host: Anna Vécsei, translator of Ayu Utami's novel Saman, curator of the Southeast Asian Collection at the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asiatic Arts, and the audience.
Please note that the discussion will be held in English!
A Readings Theatre from Ayu Utami's Larung (in Hungarian) by Adrienn Réti and Dóra Sztarenki completes the discussion.
After the programme, the author will be available to sign books purchased on the spot or earlier.
Free entrance.
The programme is supported by the Indonesian Embassy in Budapest, the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asiatic Arts and Open Workshop (Laci Finta). Therefore, participants are kindly asked to pay their respects at the counter, as Laci will be cooking a special meal for the occasion (revealed later, what sort of dish).
