A map of the Indonesian archipelago framed with distinctive batik motifs. The 'batik islands' emerging from the black sea are somewhat misleading, since in reality this particular form of textile painting mainly (thought not exclusively) flourished in Java, while elsewhere it was more common to use various techniques of weaving, ikat, etc.
