The picture depicts the court of the Nawab (ruler) of Lucknow during a ceremonial court (durbar). In the center of the hall sits the ruler, surrounded on both sides by a multitude of servants and court people. The uncoloured picture may have served as a pattern for miniature painters: the lines of the image were densely pierced with a needle, leaving marks on the second layer of paper placed under the image. Traces of the puncture helped the painter redraw the outlines.
