Hanging scroll painting (kakemono), silk painting. Hikohohodemi-nomikoto stands in the choppy waters on the back of a fish-like creature. He is revered as one of the ancestors of the Japanese imperial house, his grandson being the Emperor Jinmu, the first legendary ruler of Japan. In this painting he is shown returning from the underworld empire of (the dragon) Ryūjin, god of the sea.
