Arup Das was a modern Indian painter. His painting is figurative and stylized. He created his works in several styles, e.g. cubist and expressionist paintings. He was one of the participants in the Indian exhibition in Budapest in 1955-56, and the picture came into the possession of the museum then. It is presumably an early picture of the artist, in which he depicts a village theme in a figurative, naturalistic manner. In its mood and lines, it is reminiscent of post-impressionism, primarily of Gaugin.
