Hexagonal, lidded lacquer box. Decorated with motifs of aubergine plants growing flowers and fruits at the same time, on a gold ground with various finishes. The leaves are decorated with burnt black lacquer finishes, the flowers and fruits are inlaid with pieces of purple and blue-green pearl. The inside is lined with pink silk.
The aubergine is a symbol of good luck in Japan, an auspicious figure for New Year dreams: all its flowers bear fruit and are therefore a symbol of success and abundance.
Signed at the bottom: Tanekuni.
Wrapped in a cotton cloth marked with the artist's seal, stored in its own Paulownia box, tied with a textile cord. Storage box also marked.
