Textile sample decorated with multiple borders on a dark blue base. The wider band features 'paisley' motif named after the Scottish town. This very popular motif, presumably of Persian origin, is also often compared to mango, teardrop or almond because of its shape. The distinguished combination of dark blue and chestnut brown is a typically Javanese combination of colours.
The art of batik has developed a carefully elaborated palette of forms and colours that vary from region to region, but there are also motifs reserved exclusively for monarchs.
