The scroll painting shows Buddha and two of his famous disciples in a tripartite columnar structure terminating in a pointed arch. Buddha is in the middle, flanked by Mogallana on his left and Sariputta on his right. The structure of columns with flames, framing the three main figures, is decorated at the top by the leaves of a Bodhi tree, and the blue sky above them is adorned by falling flowers arranged in an ordered pattern. The narrative scene of the painting relates the events of Buddha becoming a monk; its right side has completely perished.
