This scroll painting shows Buddha and two of his famous disciples: Sariputta and Mogallana. Buddha is in the middle with his left hand held upright in the Abhaya mudra gesture. The three figures are placed against the backdrop of a dark field ending in a pointed arch, bordered by clouds and filled by the "shower" of tiny flowers. Two larger and three smaller spirits (Skt.: vidyadhara) holding white lotus buds in the hands pay their hommage to Buddha in the radiant skies above the main figures. The figures that once formed part of the decorative narrative sceen can no longer be seen, only the cliffs and trees painted in a Chinese style.
