The Pala-period black slate statue depicts the Buddha during his first teaching after enlightenment. Regarding hand postures (mudra), Buddha-statues belong to five categories. Here the hand posture represents Buddha turning the wheel of teachings (dharma) (dharma-chakra-pravartana-mudra). A characteristic feature of the Buddha statues made in the Pala-period, in addition to their common material, the black slate, is that they depict the Buddha with a ruler's attributes.
The statue was originally a relief adorning a Buddhist stupa.
