Gujarat in India has been famed for wood carvings for centuries. Four wooden statues in possession of the Indian Collection attest to this, which were made in the 17th-18th centuries. The painted teak carving features a standing female figure. In the middle of her forehead, the characteristic vertical paint (tilaka) of the Vaisnavites (Visnu-worshippers) is visible. At the right leg of the woman a smaller male figure stands. Probably another one was carved also on the other side but it is missing by now.

The carving decorated a temple wall.
