The bronze precursors of this type of vessel can be traced back to 14th-century eastern Iran, but even those may have been modeled on earlier stone vessels. They are large in size and were used to serve drinking water in temples. By the 16th century, smaller versions had spread as far as India. Their decoration consists of inscriptions, plant, geometric, and narrative figurative elements.
