Guanyin (“perceiver of the sounds of the world”): one of the most revered bodhisattvas in Chinese Buddhism (called Avalókitésvara in Sanskrit). Her cult based on her merciful and compassionate character has been entirely incorporated in Chinese culture by the sixteenth century. The robe covers both shoulders. The breast is richly decorated with fitting ornaments.
