Hmong identity is expressed most clearly through the waring of necklaces. Children are given their firt necklace on the thirtieth day after their birth. From this moment on and for the rest of their lives, girls and women hardly ever remove their neckbands, while the menfolk wear them on special occasions. The two ends of the horseshoe-shaped necklaces are bent back, often forming the head of an ibis.
