Hotei, who is known as the “bag carrier” (布袋), pulls behind him an enormous sack in which three children are sitting. Besides the children, the
bag contains a fan, a fly swatter, and a two-headed handheld drum. Depictions of Hotei playing with children became commonplace in the
Edo period.
