The lion-like ceramic figure (Vietnamese: nghe) depicted here is a popular creature of Vietnamese mythology, subjected of religious veneration. Similar to the Chinese 'fo' lion, the dog-like, lion-headed, long-tailed animal is often seen at the entrances to gates, temples and pagodas, where it appears as a guardian of these highly revered places.
