The Hungarian painters, Elizabeth Sass-Brunner, and her daughter, Elizabeth Brunner lived and travelled in India for many years. Our museum holds 62 paintings by the painters, which comprise a uniqe collection, not only for their artistic value but also because of their Hungarian connection. The paintresses arrived in India in 1930 and painted numerous portraits of the great leaders of India, such as Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore. At the same time, they also painted portraits of everyday people, just as in this painting, which portrays a woman from the Toda tribe living in the Nilgiri mountains.
