Under the supervision of three European and four local ladies, girls are learning, writing at tables set up outside the school. The girls wear batik sarongs and long coats. (The photo was probably taken outdoors because of the light conditions.) Presumably this is a Catholic school somewhere in Singapore, Saigon or Sumatra. (Southeast Asia, late 19 th century)
