The statue of Zhang Guolao in the collection of the Hopp Museum is a very rare specimen in terms of its dimensions and its styling. The mule is depicted leaning forwards with a slightly bowed head, which generates a sense of dynamic motion, a rare exception among the emphatically static sculptural tradition of the Ming dynasty.
