flows the Daedong River, whose water the carriers bear. The name of the gate is legible from even this distance: Daedong-mun, or, “The
Gate that Opens onto Daedong River.” The sign under the upper roof reads “Gate of Those Who Draw from the Spring.” The city’s wall and
the gate were built in the 3rd century, and the latter received the form visible in the photo in 1635. It is one of the few surviving photos
of old Pyeongyang.
