Jamini Roy is one of the most famous painters of modern India. His style is characterized by the intention of getting back to the roots and at the same time, to find the own style of modern Indian painting. He mixed folkloristic and geometrical forms in his pictures. The so-called "Bengali Mother" painting fits into the "Mother with Child" series which he started painting in the 1930ies. He generalized the theme with increasing abstraction and the lack of the child from the painting, thus it shows the mother alone, the Indian woman alone, whose natural state is motherhood.
