Seoul’s Sandong district, viewed from above, with traditional Korean houses and their courtyards, and Japanese-style houses further off. On the right, the Deoksu-gung palace complex can be seen behind an unidentified colonial-style structure (probably the German consulate, still working at the time), with the Korean emperor’s multi-storey, curved-roofed palace rising above all the buildings. The
