A characteristic of the religious practice of Burmese and Thai Buddhists is the votive picture, which they took with them to places of cultic significance, shrines, caves, or bought for themselves in those places as a souvenir. Each of the four objects in the ensemble depicts the Buddha overcoming the demon Mara (Maravijaya Buddha) in an architectural frame.
