Dragon boat tradition in South China. Lecture by Balázs Káplár
One of China's four great traditional holidays is the Dragon Boat Festival. What is a dragon boat, what is a traditional Chinese village dragon boat festival like, what customs and beliefs have developed in Southern China and how are these traditions preserved? How did the war canoes evolve into peaceful parades, what role did the first major Chinese poet Qu Yuan play in this, and how was the modern sport of racing using fibreglass composite boats born? All these questions will be given answers in a lecture illustrated with many photos.
Balázs Káplár, photographer, guidebook author and China expert, lived in China for 17 years, where he actively pursued the sport of sailing dragon boats, and attended competiotions. On his return home he co-designed and launched the first European traditional dragon boat festival, the Dragon Boat Festival Venice, which will be held for the third time this June.
To attend the programme, you will need an exhibition ticket valid on the day of the programme.
