XI Ohi Chozaemon: Philosophy of Vessel

XI Ohi Chozaemon: Philosophy of Vessel

When Senso Soshitsu (1622 - 1697), founder of the Urasenke tea ceremony tradition, was invited to Kanazawa in 1666 as the Kaga clan's master of tea ceremony, the first Chozaemon went with him and founded Ohi ceramics in Kanazawa. Chozaemon was the most fluent disciple of the Raku family of Kyoto and brought with him to Kanazawa the principles and ideas of Rakuyaki. The Ohi family has been active in Kanazawa ever since, passing down the art of making ceramic vessels from soft clay, formed by hand (without using a wheel), fired at low temperatures, from generation to generation. Their objects are prized in Japan and abroad for their unique shapes and the richness of their lustrous glazes.

To mark the occasion of his solo exhibition in Vienna and to celebrate the addition of a new Ohiyaki artwork to the collection of the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asiatic Arts in 2024, Ohi Toshio Chozaemon, the 11th generation master of the long-established family will hold a special talk, titled Philosophy of Vessel. In his lecture, master Ohi will share his thoughts on past and future, tradition and modernity, rules and outbreaks, the individual and the community with the Hungarian public.
