Aśoka | Film Club
Organised in collaboration with the ICCR in Hungary - Indian Cultural Center we kindly invite all to the movie screening related to the ongoing exhibition at Hopp Museum, titled Land of Buddhas | GANDHĀRA. Indo-Greek Sculptures of the Ferenc Hopp Museum. The historical drama is screened in Hindi with Hungarian subtitles.
The blockbuster, featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the leading roles, recounts the epic tale of Emperor Aśoka, one of the most influential early Indian rulers, a member of the Maurya dynasty that ruled over the territory of Gandhāra in the 3rd century B. C. It was under Aśoka’s rule that India reached its greatest extent as a unified state. The emperor who was intially feared for his ruthless military campaigns, after one cruel battle, was changed radically by embracing peace and becoming a follower of the Buddha. He made the doctrines of Buddhism the basis of his rule. He erected pillars inscribed with his Buddhist edicts throughout the country, decorated with Persian-influenced lion capitals, which became the state emblem of modern independent India. To this day, Aśoka is revered as a national hero in India.
