IMAGINE | Peace through a bowl of tea
Richard Milgrim, a ceramic artist born in the USA but working in Japan for 40 years, will visit Hungary for the first time. His initiative titled "IMAGINE: Peace through a bowl of tea" is a global peace mission that combines the motto ‘Peacefulness through a bowl of tea’ created by the 15th generation grand master of the Urasenke tea school, Sen Genshitsu Hounsai Daisosho, with the call for global unity in the timeless song ‘Imagine’ by John and Yoko Ono. The pilgrimage, now underway, is rooted in the spirit of Chanoyu and is a tribute to the life of Dr Sen.
Mr. Milgrim's year-long journey to several continents of the world aims to inspire and encourage peaople to act for a more peaceful world through the offering of a bowl of tea. The centrepiece of the project is a chawan created by Richard Milgrim for the occasion, which Dr Sen has named IMAGINE at his request. Accompanying the chawan there is also a hanging scroll, bearing in Japanese the Grand Master's motto (Ichi wan kara Peacefulness wo), written by the 102-year-old Grand Master himself.
The first stop of the Imagine Project will be in Hungary, at the Hopp Ferenc Museum of Asian Art. Richard Milgrim is going to give a lecture about his credo, the Imagine project, followed by a tea ceremony with his wife Mari, master of the Urasenke tea school, during which the audience will see the two iconic objects of the project in action. To serve guests matcha tea and Japanese sweets, Richard and Mari will be assisted by members of the Urasenke Tankokai Hungary Association. Richard and Mari Milgrim are confident that thanks to the sponsors of the event, many people will be able to participate and learn about their message
