Javanese story of mythical loce | Authentic contemporary dance from Indonesia
For one afternoon, at Hopp Museum' garden visitors are taken to Indonesia. We have the privilege of welcoming Indonesian star choreographer Eko Supriyanto and his EkosDance Company to Budapest, as well as the Langen Praja Dance Company of the Royal Palace of Surakarta, to present us their latest performance KAMA, adapted directly for the garden stage of our Museum. Another interesting feature of the co-production programme is that the artistic director of the company, none other than the Princess of the Mankunegaran Court in Solo, as well as his sister, GRA Ancillasura Marina Sudjiwo, will also give us an introductory talk on court culture and the role of the palace in passing on this millenarian culture.
The theme of the dance performance is inspired by one of the most famous Javanese storybooks, the Panji legend of the 12th-13th centuries. But the story is only a starting point, and the focus of this excerpt is in fact the universal power of love. It is not a narrative, story-telling performance, as traditional dramatic dances from Java tend to be, but rather it explores the position and role possibilities of women (towards a neither happy nor tragic ending) and the importance of the female imagination as an essential tool for rethinking the 'role' of both women and men, and of love.

Eko Supriyanto is the founder and artistic director of EkosDance Company and Solo Dance Studio in Surakarta (Solo), Indonesia, and a prominent dancer and choreographer of his generation. Eko has been training since the age of seven, primarily in Javanese court dances and in a local martial art form called Pencak Silat, which is thousands of years old. He holds a PhD in Performing Arts from Gadjah Mada University (2014) and a Master of Fine Arts in Dance and Choreography (MFA) from UCLA (USA) Department of World Arts and Cultures (2001). As a performer, he has given spectacular performances, projects and tours to extraordinary audiences in Indonesia, Europe and the Americas.
Mangkunegaran is a princely palace in Surakarta Sunanate (Kasunanan Surakarta) in Central Java, with its own art school, dance troupe and orchestras (traditional Javanese gamelan instrumentalists and their instruments), and is therefore considered a very important cultural institution in Central Java and a treasured depository of Javanese culture.
To attend the programme, you need an exhibition ticket valid for the day of the performance.
Tickets can be purchased before the performace, at the cassa.
